Reflection 2, Management vs. Leadership 3. Why Resolutions Fail ************************************ ===================================================== 1. Reflection ===================================================== REFLECTION by Todd Brockdorf Ah...the New Year.... It’s a perfect time to look back on the year that was and look to the year that it can be. Now is an excellent opportunity for reflection. Were you happy with yourself in 2002? What did you like? What, looking back on it now, do you wish you had done differently? Reflection is a powerful tool that can help you clarify where you want to go by examining the past. For example, I had a successful work life in 2002. I reached most of my goals, I challenged myself, and I positioned myself well for a good 2003. However, did not achieve the goals that I hoped to achieve in my personal life. Experienced leaders understand the power of reflection. It helps them set and achieve goals that they desire. By seeing the outcome, they can step back and examine the process that got them to where they are today. Some of those steps in the process were right. Some could have been done differently. The key that leaders take away from reflection is learning. Leaders learn from their past. They try something. If it works, they keep doing it. If it fails, they stop doing it. It is only by a close examination of the past and the steps that it took to get there do leaders learn from their past actions. After all, it is said hindsight is always 20/20. Start chronologically. Think back to January 2002. What were you doing? Are you still doing what you were doing? What people were in your life? Are they still in your life? Try to progress month by month to get a complete picture of your 2002. Are you happy? What makes you unhappy? Why? Set your goals for 2003 by accelerating what was going right and changing what you were not happy with in 2002. Reflection just does not have to be a once-a-year occurrence. You can reflect after each day. But it takes too long, you could argue. Do it when you have a break in your day. But, I don't have a break in my day, you say. What do you spend your time doing while in the bathroom? It’s a perfect time to reflect while you are perched upon your throne. If you reflect on the past, the future becomes clearer. ***** KEEP YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS **************** LEARN HOW TO SUCCEED IN YOUR RESOLUTIONS AND OUTLINE A PLAN FOR SUCCESS! THIS AIN'T YOUR USUAL GOAL SETTING WORKSHOP. http://www.leadwithvision.com/teleseminar ****************************************************** ===================================================== 2. Management vs. Leadership ===================================================== MANAGEMENT VS. LEADERSHIP by Todd Brockdorf For the majority of corporate America, the New Year means personnel review time. Employees are trying to justify a pay raise, or in this day, trying to justify their job, while managers have to sift through the paperwork and report on their group’s progress to the higher-ranking management. Is management the same as leadership? I argue that it is not the same. Managers can be leaders, but the skills are inherently different. Do all managers make good leaders? Definitely not. Coming from a large corporation, low level management tends to be an extension of Human Resources. Are the proper employee papers filed? Are all of the vacation days properly accounted? How does the employee match up against the standardized "numbers"? These are questions that low level management tends to deal with. There isn't much leadership at lower levels of management. Leadership occurs at the level that can set and affect the strategic vision. Leadership is about inspiring those that work under you to work to achieve the vision. Simply put, management can be compared to a taskmaster and leadership is about strategic vision. When you are in charge, are you a leader or a manager? Are you truly leading you life to somewhere, or managing it through day- to-day activities? Leaders make decisions. Managers arrange tasks. ************************************ ===================================================== 3. Why Resolutions Fail ===================================================== WHY RESOLUTIONS FAIL by Todd Brockdorf Have you made a resolution for the New Year? Is it the same resolution that you made last year? Whether you looked in the mirror and decided that it was time to lose weight (again), or looked in your wallet and realized that you needed to find another way to get some cash (again), chances are, you will still be in the same situation that you were in last year. We kick ourselves for not succeeding, but rarely do we look at why they fail. Resolutions fail because most people do not have a plan to follow through on them. It is this plan that can guide to you to success. Create a list of specific steps that would help you get toward your goal. For example, if you want to lose weight, first determine if you want to join a gym or exercise on your own. If you want to join a gym, determine which ones are in your area and in your price range. Then, pick times and days that are usually convenient for you and block those into your schedule. You might want to consider taking classes that have a specific start time. Make every effort to get to the gym at the time that you blocked in your schedule - no matter how you feel, no matter the stresses at work, no matter what else is going on. Once it becomes a part of your schedule, you have a better chance of succeeding at your goal. Celebrate your success. Reward yourself for all of your hard work and may you not ever that to make that same resolution yet another year. Good luck. I know you can do it. ************************************ ****** EARN BIG REFERRAL COMMISSIONS ********* You can earn a 10 - 25 percent commission for referring Todd for speaking engagements.
